Rush Featured in June 2012 Issue of MOJO Magazine

Rush Featured in June 2012 Issue of MOJO Magazine
Update (05/08/2012): The entire article is now online and can be viewed HERE. Enjoy.
The June 2012 issue of the UK Music Magazine MOJO will contain a eight-page feature on Rush.

From the website:
RUSH: How the highbrow Canuck proggers fed on Tolkien, Ayn Rand, weed and whiskey, survived critics and personal tragedies to become “the biggest cult band in the world.”
Though Rush isn't a cover-story feature, the magazine cover art does include Rush's Star Man logo and the tagline "RUSH. Alienation. Weed. Epic Insanity!".

The issue should hit the newsstands shortly. We'll also have a complete transcription of the article in the near future.

If anyone out there happens to have the issue in hand already, please let us know via the comments section below.

MIDIpedals.Com Interview With Rush Roadie Tony Geranios (aka Jack Secret) - Part 1.5

 Tony Geranios
Back in March, MIDIpedals.com posted the first part of an extensive interview that they conducted with long-time Rush roadie Tony Geranios (aka Jack Secret). Terry Goyette of MidiPedals just informed me that Part 1.5 of the interview is now available on their website.

From MidiPedals:
A couple of weeks after posting Part 1, Tony called me and hoped to finish up the interview. When he called I was not prepared to record the call, and let him know I would need to call him back. I am assuming Rush has started tour rehearsals, so he has been busy and we haven’t been able to do Part 2 because we haven’t been able to schedule a second interview. Here are a few questions I emailed to him and his answers. I call it Part 1.5 in hopes we can do Part 2 soon.
Both Part 1 (Video) and Part 2 (Transcribed) can be accessed HERE.

Thanks to Terry Goyette for passing along the news.

Alex Lifeson: The High Times Interview Now Online

Alex Lifeson: The High Times Interview
An interview with Alex Lifeson is featured in the June 2012 issue of High Times Magazine. The discussion with Alex focuses on Rush's influence with marijuana, his thoughts on the legalization of the drug and its inspiration on the Rush classic A Passage to Bangkok.

However a comment about the making of Clockwork Angels was particularly interesting...
You founded Rush in 1968 and still seem to find so much joy in recording and performing. What makes this new album unique?

All of our records are thematic, but this one is a little more of an old-fashioned concept album in the tradition of 2112 and Hemispheres. We just recorded a string section yesterday for five of the songs-we still have to sit down and see what we'll use from that, but it sounded fantastic. Rush hasn't used strings in a while, and it's really added a lot of emotional impact to the songs.

Rush's Headlong Flight Now Streaming Online!

Rush Headlong Flight
Update (04/20/2012 1:30PM EST): Check out the review of Headlong Flight from Ultimate Classic Rock - a rating of 8 out of 10!
Update (04/19/2012 8:00AM EST): Rush has officially released a video - with lyrics - of Headlong Flight. You can watch it below.

Update (2:20PM EST): Thanks to the efforts of readers Skip Daly and Melissa Missy Williamson, we now have a preliminary view of the lyrics behind the Headlong Flight single. Check them out HERE.
Rolling Stone, of all sources, has just released the FULL VERSION of Rush's new single Headlong Flight on their website.

From Rolling Stone:
"Headlong Flight," the first single from Rush's 20th studio album Clockwork Angels, is one of the trio's most hard-charging numbers in recent years. "'Headlong Flight' was one of those songs that was a joy to write and record from beginning to end," says frontman Geddy Lee. "Alex [Lifeson] and I had blast jamming in my home studio one day before the second leg of the Time Machine tour, and I did not revisit that jam until a year later. Alex and I assembled the song to be an instrumental and its original title was 'Take That Lampshade Off Yo Head!," but once we saw the lyrics Neil [Peart] had written, I knew that the spirit of the lyrics matched the instrumental perfectly and it was just a matter of making them fit and writing the melodies."
Have a listen and share your thoughts and comments below!

Rush Receive Revolver's Ronnie James Dio Lifetime Achievement Award

Rush receives Revolver Golden Gods Lifetime Achievement Award Rush receives Revolver Golden Gods Lifetime Achievement Award
Last month we let you know that Rush was up for Revolver Magazine's Ronnie James Dio Lifetime Achivement Award. The ceremony took place last night and Neil Peart was in attendance to accept the award.

From Ultimate Classic Rock:
After giving a plug to the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, Tenacious D presented the band in their typical style, with Kyle Gass and Jack Black trading lines of praise about the band. “For almost 40 years, this band has been blowing our minds and expanding everyone’s definition of rock,” Gass said.

“Can anyone imagine a world without ‘Tom Sawyer?’” Black continued as the duo proceeded to name other Rush classics. “These songs and many others have become part of our collective DNA. They either inspired you enough to pick up an instrument and practice like hell”

To which Gass replied, “Or, let’s be honest, discouraged you from even trying to approach their technical prowess.”

Drummer Neil Peart was the only member of the band on hand to accept the award. Bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee was in Japan, and guitarist Alex Lifeson, who Peart claimed is “the funniest man in the world,” was in Toronto.

Although known for his challenging and wordy lyrics, Peart was uncharacteristically brief and direct in his acceptance speech. He simply wanted to “express our gratitude. Our lifetimes aren’t over, our achievements aren’t over, so this is like ‘So far, so good,’ and we’ll keep trying to get better. Thank you.”
Below is a video of Neil's acceptance speech:

Clockwork Angels to be Released in Lossless 96kHz/24-bit via HDTrack.Com

Rush Clockwork Angels Album Cover
According to Roadrunner Records, Rush's forthcoming album Clockwork Angels will be released in lossless 96kHz/24-bit FLAC through HDTracks.Com. Long-time reader MrSatyre reached out to Roadrunner to confirm this. Here's what he had to say about the release:
Folks, spoke with Roadrunner, and this album will be available on HDTracks.com in lossless 96kHz/24-bit FLAC! This is awesome news, people, as you will be able to listen to the new album in true studio master tape quality, not lowly 44.1kHz/16-bit CD-quality audio (to say nothing of *choke* crappy MP3)!

For those of you not in the know, FLAC is Free Lossless Audio Codec, and it's been around for quite a while. Of the numerous lossless audio codecs out there, which allow you to listen to an original recording in all its finite glory, or rip your existing music collection without losing any details and nuances to compression, FLAC is the most common and most widely distributed among audiophiles. Moving Pictures is also available in 96kHz/24-bit FLAC on HDTracks.com.

You will need to register at HDTracks.com to download tracks or entire albums. An entire album averages around $20, just be forewarned, but again you are getting STUDIO MASTER TAPE QUALITY! If you are using anything other than a portable music player and earbuds, this is the ONLY way to listen to music short of being there in the studio when it's being mixed and mastered.

You will either need a computer or laptop connected directly to your audio system in one of two ways: 1) with a high-end dedicated audio card with L/R analog outputs to your preamp or receiver, or 2) with an outboard DAC such as a Pioneer N-50 which can accept audio from a network attached hard drive or directly from your computer via USB or Ethernet. There are lots of other hardware solutions out there, too.
The album is also rumored to receive the 5.1 treatment as well, but nothing official has been announced on that front - yet.

Thanks to MrSatyre for proving the news and information on this audio option.

Update (11:40am EST): Rush.Com has been re-skinned with new artwork to celebrate the official announcement of the release of Clockwork Angels. The band also posted the following about the forthcoming album:
CELEBRATED ROCK TRIO’S FIRST STUDIO ALBUM IN FIVE YEARS SET TO ARRIVE ON JUNE 12TH

NEW SINGLE “HEADLONG FLIGHT” LANDS AT ROCK RADIO ON APRIL 19TH

Rush has unveiled details of its highly anticipated, new album, “CLOCKWORK ANGELS.” This is the first new collection of original material in over five years and their first studio release via Anthem/Roadrunner records. “CLOCKWORK ANGELS,” the band’s 20th studio album, will be released on June 12th.

The recording of “CLOCKWORK ANGELS” began in April 2010 with Grammy Award winning producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Deftones) – who also collaborated with the band on their last studio album, 2007’s “SNAKES & ARROWS.” Rush co-produced both records. The first two songs, “Caravan” and “BU2B,” were completed during that first session at Nashville’s Blackbird studios and performed nightly during the wildly successful Time Machine Tour, which ran from June 2010 to June 2011. Work on “CLOCKWORK ANGELS” resumed in the fall of 2011 at Revolution Recording in Toronto after the tour’s finale, with additional strings (arranged by David Campbell) recorded at Hollywood’s Ocean Way Studios earlier this year.

Lyrically, “CLOCKWORK ANGELS” chronicles a young man’s quest across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy as he attempts to follow his dreams. The story features lost cities, pirates, anarchists, an exotic carnival, and a rigid Watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life. The novelization of “CLOCKWORK ANGELS” is being written by science fiction writer Kevin J. Anderson in collaboration with Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart.

Rush will herald the release of “CLOCKWORK ANGELS” with a new single “Headlong Flight” landing at rock radio on April 19th. Details of a full-scale North American tour to support the new album will be announced shortly. - Rush.com, April 11, 2012

Billboard Magazine has just posted an official announcement regarding the release (now set for June 2012) of Rush's forthcoming album Clockwork Angels. The announcement includes the complete tracklist for the album (12 songs in all):
1. Caravan
2. BU2B
3. Clockwork Angels
4. The Anarchist
5. Carnies
6. Halo Effect
7. Seven Cities Of Gold
8. The Wreckers
9. Headlong Flight
10. BU2B2
11. Wish Them Well
12. The Garden
There's also a trailer for the album which includes a preview of the first single Headlong Flight:

Finally, according to the announcement, Clockwork Angels will be released on June 12th and not May 29th as originally expected.

Read the entire announcement at this LINK.

You can also now pre-order Clockwork Angels from Amazon.Com once again. The current price is $19.61 which seems to imply that the CD may be packaged with a 5.1 DVD version as well. More news on that potential offering as it becomes available.

Original Geddy Lee Portrait Available for Sale

Geddy Lee Portrait
Artist Mark Tumber recently contacted me, sharing an original piece of art that he created featuring Geddy Lee, the classic RUSH logo and Geddy's Fender Jazz Bass. Mark is making the original drawing available for sale, as well as prints.

From Mark:
I recently finished drawing a photo-realistic rendering of Geddy Lee (see watermarked image). I've always been a fan of RUSH and the prowess they each have over their 'art'. This portrait clocked in at roughly 40 hours of actual drawing time. It also shows the Fender Jazz Bass that Geddy has always played & been a spokesman for.

This drawing would look great in a music room, bar or den and is the perfect gift for any RUSH fan or aspiring bass player. Geddy has a very expressive and unique visage and I'm pretty sure that I captured his 'look'. The original is 14"x17" (unframed) and is available for purchase for $800. Courier costs (if applicable) would be an additional expense.

I also have smaller 8"x10" acid-free prints of Geddy Lee. These sell for only $35 each. If shipping within Canada, the total cost is $45. If shipping to America, the cost is $55. These are a standard size and can easily be framed in an 11"x14" frame with an 8"x10" matte opening.
If you're interested in purchasing the original artwork or one of the prints, please contact Mark directly at markdraws@hotmail.com or through his website at www.marktumber.com or his Facebook Page.

Last week, the first new single from Clockwork Angels was previewed at a Roadrunner Records-sponsored listening party for journalists and industry executives. The single, titled Headlong Flight, was very well received. At that time, it was reported that the single would hit the airwaves on April 19th however we now have additional information on the release.

A very limited preview release on select stations will take place next Wednesday, April 11th. It's possible that only a single airing of Headlong Flight will take place on the 11th. The single will then be released on a limited number of stations on April 19th - 20th. Finally, the general radio release along with a digital release on iTunes and other formats will occur on Tuesday, April 24th.

At this time, there is no word yet if a CD-single release will accompany the digital release.

We'll have more news as it becomes available.

Thanks to Ed from RushIsABand for passing along the news.

Rush Clockwork Angels Album Cover and Tour Book Artwork Revealed?

Rush Clockwork Angels Tourbook Cover Rush Clockwork Angels Album Cover
Ed from RushIsABand just let me know that he was fed what appears to be legitimate artwork for Rush's upcoming Clockwork Angels album and tour. The artwork came from a very reliable source, though it has yet to be confirmed publicly by the band or Anthem Entertainment.

The album cover depicts a clock of runes in the familiar Clockwork Angels style, and has an imposing, swirling red vortex in the background.

The possible tourbook cover is very reminiscent of some of the artwork that appeared in the Snakes & Arrows album booklet. What's more interesting about the tour book cover is the fact that a dalmation and a fire hydrant are depicted as well. Unquestionably, this is somehow tied to the Signals album which is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year.

Could this indicate that, similar to the Time Machine Tour of 2010-11, Rush are planning on performing Signals in its entirety during the tour? Time will tell.

Hopefully Rush will confirm the album artwork soon. We'll let you known when they do.

Thanks again to Ed for passing along the news.

Rush to Appear on the Cover of Rolling Stone Magazine

Rush Featured on Cover of Rolling Stone Magazine Rush Featured on Cover of Rolling Stone Magazine
Update: April Fools, Everyone! Yes, by now I'm sure you all figured out that Rush appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine was, of course, an April Fool's joke. It was a blast perpetrating this joke alongside my partners in crime, Eric from Power Windows and Ed from RushIsABand. The three of us came up with this idea several weeks back and have been carefully plotting out the details ever since. We all hope you enjoyed the ride. We now return you to your regularly scheduled Rush news :-)
Update: My contact at Rolling Stone Magazine just informed me that an excerpt from the cover story along with some photos are now available online. Check them out via this link: Rush in Rolling Stone - Image Excerpts. Enjoy!
Now this is a first. According to a source from Rolling Stone Magazine who just contacted me, Rush will appear front-and-center on the cover of the upcoming April 21st, 2012 issue of the famed music magazine. The issue will include a feature story titled ‘Clockwork Excellence’, as well as numerous photos of the band, reportedly taken during their Clockwork Angels recording sessions in Toronto and potentially also their mixing sessions in Los Angeles.

The source also sent along the following working copy of the magazine cover (Image) and indicated that some story excerpts and photos from the issue would be available at RollingStone.Com soon.

According to the story headlines listed on the working cover, some information regarding the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Rush's omission from the institution will be included in the issue. That alone should be worth the price of admission!

After receiving the information, I reached out to Eric from Power Windows and Ed from RushIsABand, both of whom also received the same information.

Over the decades, Rolling Stone magazine hasn’t necessarily been kind to Rush. However their attitude has changed of late which led to Rush being featured, though not as part of a cover story, back in July of 2008 in the article ‘Rush Never Sleeps’.

We’ll have more information – and links to the story and photo excerpts at Rolling Stone's website – when they become available.

In the mean time, click HERE to view a high-resolution version of the working cover artwork.
