Rush R40 Live 40th Anniversary Tour Update - First Leg Set to End in Virginia

Rush R40 Live 40th Anniversary Tour Update - First Leg Set to End in Virginia
Update: Back from Bristow with one or two (hundred) pics to share. Click HERE to view the gallery.
Rush is set to take the stage at the Jiffy Lube Live amphitheater in Bristow, Virginia tonight as they close out the first of three legs in their ongoing R40 Live 40th Anniversary Tour. Including tonight, the band will have performed twelve dates since opening night.

Throughout the tour thus far, Rush have been consistently rotating three moderately different set lists each night. And, without giving too much away for those of you who still want to avoid spoilers, the songs, the stage production, and the entire theme of each show has been incredibly well received.

For those who don't mind be spoiled, there are amazing photographs from each show online with each set showcasing the incredible stage, light, and equipment show. Be warned, however, as the pictures do highlight some of the songs performed each night.

After the Virginia show, the band will take a well-deserved break before embarking on the second leg of the tour in Columbus, Ohio at the Nationwide Arena on June 8th. Rush will then perform throughout June before taking another week-long break ahead of the third and final leg of the tour.

European fans have been anxiously awaiting word on whether or not the band will cross the Atlantic for a string of shows. While there has been no official word yet, recent interviews with both Geddy and Alex have at least hinted at the possibility.

In other tour-related news, Live Nation is sponsoring a contest where you can win a trip to Vegas to see Rush perform. For all the details, click HERE.

For those heading to Virginia tonight (like myself), have a blast! I hope to see some of you there!

New MLB Interview: On Their Game: Randy Johnson and Geddy Lee

New MLB Interview: On Their Game: Randy Johnson and Geddy Lee
As most fans know, one of Geddy Lee's passions beyond music and wine is America's favorite past-time: Baseball. Over the years, Geddy has become friends with many notable players including MLB hall-of-fame inductee Randy Johnson. Johnson, who is an avid photographer, has been a long-time fan of Rush and has taken numerous pictures of the band over the years.

MLB.Com has just posted a lengthy interview between Geddy Lee and Randy Johnson where they discuss their mutual admiration and long-standing friendship:
Lee, chuckling, described their friendship as "a mutual appreciation society."

"One of the things I've always admired about Randy is the thoughtful and intelligent approach he always took to his game," he said. "Always looking for an edge, always looking for a way to be better at what he did on the mound. The way he talked about being accountable. You don't hear a lot of athletes talk about being accountable. I found that inspiring. I took away from that something that I could apply to my own profession."

Johnson, who works for the D-backs as a special assistant and spends most of his time in that job tutoring Minor League pitchers, said he enjoys hearing stories of when Rush was just a young and untested band waiting for the big break.

"When I was young, I was kind of a free-willed person," Johnson said. "I just kind of got the ball and went out and pitched. There was more to it than that. I enjoyed hearing [Lee's] stories about when they were coming up, and they were warming up for some of the bands that are still out there performing to this day."
You can watch the entire interview via the player below or directly at MLB.COM.

You can check out a gallery of Johnson's pictures, including shots he took at the Austin show earlier this month, HERE.

MLB.Com is also holding sponsoring a Rush Off To Chicago VIP contest where the winner will get two tickets to Rush's June 12th show in Chicago, a Meet and Greet with Rush and Randy Johnson, two tickets to a Cubs at Wrigley Field on Saturday, June 13th, hotel and airfare, and $200 spending money. Rush Featured on Cover of Classic Rock Magazine July 2015 Issue - Includes New Interview "We're Coming Towards the End"

Rush Featured on Cover of Classic Rock Magazine July 2015 Issue - Includes New Interview We're Coming Towards the End
Update: Classic rock has posted additional content from the Geddy/Alex interview. Click HERE to read more.
Rush will once again grace the cover of an upcoming issue of Classic Rock magazine. Appearing on the July 2015 issue, the magazine includes a lengthy interview with Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee titled "Rush: We're Coming Towards the End".

Segments of the interview are available online courtesy of TeamRock:
Could this tour be the last for Rush?
We’ll see. Right now the tour is what it is. Whether we add more dates, I think it all boils down to Neil, really. It’s a very athletic endeavour for him to go on tour. He’s sixty-two years old. Physically it’s difficult. And it’s the same for me.

Your arthritis – how bad is it?
I’ve had it for ten years, and this is the first time I’m really feeling it in my hands and my feet. That’s the way it goes. But it’s a lot harder for Neil. He’s got tendonitis in his arm. To be honest, I don’t know how he gets through playing the way he does, being in that sort of discomfort and pain. But he’s a very stoic guy. He never complains.

But there’s more to it than that. Neil has said many times that his first priority is his family, his young daughter.
I don’t think that’s something he even needs to talk about. I don’t know if sometimes he says these things because he doesn’t know how to come out and say it face-to-face to us that he doesn’t want to do it any more, that he’s tired of it, that he feels after forty years that’s a pretty good run and that he shouldn’t have to feel bad about not wanting to do it any more. He wants to spend more time at home and with his family. I get it. He’s never been keen about touring. It’s always a difficult thing for him.

Is Neil unhappy about doing this tour?
He was resistant to it until he started prepping and realised: hey, I can still play my drums pretty good! And then getting into rehearsals with us, there’s that whole camaraderie that he really adores. So when he’s back into the stream, he loves the swim.
And there is still hope for a new album in the future:
You feel confident there is another album in you?
Yeah, I think there is. I’m sure if we start coming up with some stuff, Neil would be right in there. He’d love that.
You can check out the entire online version of the article at this LINK.

The article also continues to give hope that the R40 tour will extend into 2016 and reach out to Europe:
These days it’s Lee who is driving Rush forward. He wants to tour more. If he gets his way, the band will return to the UK and mainland Europe in 2016. Whatever happens next, he says, will be dependent on how the other two guys are feeling after the US tour: “If everyone’s really digging it, the way I think we will, then we might carry on.”

R40 Live 40th Anniversary Tour Update - First Week is in the Books

R40 Live 40th Anniversary Tour Update - First Week is in the Books
The first week of Rush's 40th Anniversary celebration tour is now over and what a week it has been. The band opened up their tour last Friday the 8th at the Tulsa Bok Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma in front of a packed house of fans and provided a show like no other Rush concert before it. The band then played three more dates, travelling to Lincoln, Nebrasksa, St. Paul, Minnesota, and St. Louis, Missouri.

As expected, the band has been rotating a few songs in and out of the set list each night and word has it that there are more songs to be introduced in future shows. For a complete rundown of the current R40 set list, with all of its changes from night to night, click HERE.

As we've done in the past, we are creating special photo galleries for each R40 tour date. Check out some of the great pics from the first four shows below:

  • Tulsa, OK 05/08/2015
  • Lincoln, NE 05/10/2015
  • St. Paul, MB 05/12/2015
  • St. Louis, MO 05/14/2015

The R40 tour book has also been transcribed and can be read at this LINK. Photos from the tour book will also be uploaded in the very near future.

Though there has been no official announcement, we've received word that Rush does plan to record and film the two shows in Toronto on June 17th and 19th for a future live album and concert DVD. We'll have more on this developing story as it becomes available.

The band will now head to Texas for a string of three shows before heading east for stops in Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and finally Virginia on May 30th. At that point, the band will rest for a week before resuming the tour on June 8th in Columbus, Ohio.

It's hard to believe, but it's been 642 days since Rush exited the stage at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, ending their incredibly successful Clockwork Angels tour. And now, after a nearly two year absence, Rush will once again take the stage to celebrate their 40th (okay, 41st) Anniversary with the launch of their R40 Live 40th Anniversary Tour tonight.

The first leg of the 34 city/35 date tour will open at the Tulsa BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Ahead of the show, Tulsa World has posted an article about opening night - Rush set to open 40th anniversary tour in Tulsa Friday.

As we've done in the past, Cygnus-X1.Net will be revealing the complete set list from tonight's show LIVE as it happens. To view the set list as it gets updated, click HERE. Other news and updates from tonight's show will be posted on this page as the evening progresses.

As most fans know, the R40 tour is being billed as (possibly) the last major tour of its kind for Rush. Whether that statement is true or not, there is a growing campaign that is asking fans attending the shows to honor Alex, Geddy, and Neil in appreciation of all their hard work throughout the decades. The campaign, dubbed HOLD THE RED STAR PROUDLY HIGH IN HAND, is asking the following:
Download the Red Star image on this page (click for a larger version), or a similar one, to your phone, and when the guys come back on stage after intermission, hold your phone in the air towards the stage and display the Red Star, proudly! I'm sure Lerxst, Dirk and Pratt would be happy to walk out to an arena FULL of glowing Red Stars. If you think it's a good idea, PASS THE WORD and SHARE! #holdtheredstarappreciationcampaign -Michael Mark
A great idea that will hopefully gain steam as the tour progresses.

For all of you heading to Tulsa for the show tonight, be safe, enjoy, and please share your pictures and comments!

New Fender Guitar Interview with Geddy Lee: What Makes Rush So Unique?

New Fender Guitar Interview with Geddy Lee: What Makes Rush So Unique?
Geddy Lee discusses how things have changed for Rush over the years in a new interview posted by Fender Guitars titled What Makes Rush So Unique?.

    From the interview:
"...perhaps, the most refreshing thing about Rush is that 40 plus years in, these men still have a deep dedication to each other and a “Three Musketeers” one for all, all for one mentality not found by many of their counterparts who are often wrecked by in-fighting. If one person doesn’t want to tour or record an album, then Rush simply waits.

“You spend 40 years with the same people and all of our heart and our sweat and our personalities goes into the music that we make,” Lee explained. “It’s also a friendship —a collaborative kind of club that we are doing this and this is our thing, together. It’s connected to the personalities, it’s connected to the human beings. It’s not something anyone can step into and it will be a thing. It is the thing that is dependent on the three people who are in the band, and were one to leave or not want to play anymore, you couldn’t just replace that person with some other person; It’s going to change the chemistry. It’s going to change the dynamics, and as such, it would be a different band.

“Rush as I see it, is as an identifiable living thing dependent and interdependent and connected to the three goofs that are in that band, and that’s how it will remain.”

Countdown to R40: Rush Have Arrived in Tulsa!

Alex Lifeson Talks About Rush's R40 Tour in New InterviewAlex Lifeson Talks About Rush's R40 Tour in New Interview
One week from tonight, Rush will take the stage at the Tulsa Bok Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma to launch their 34-city/35-date "R40 Live 40th Anniversary Tour" and, based on some sightings, it appears the band has arrived, at least in part, in Tulsa.

Yesterday, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson were spotted at the Tulsa International Airport (photo courtesy of Lynn Hernadez) while Neil's tour motorcycle is reportedly ready and waiting for him in Tulsa as well (photo courtesy of Jim Sotelo).

Ever since the announcement of this tour, there has been wide-ranging speculation on the set-list and the general arrangement of the show. Will the band touch upon every album in their catalog, or will they focus on their early years? Will their be another medley to introduce the show, similar to the R30 Overture, or will they stay true to each song. If this is truly their "last big tour", will they go out with a bang, or play it safe? So many questions, so many theories, and they will all be answered in one week.

As we have in the past, the set list for this tour will be revealed LIVE as is happens and posted directly on this page. We'll also be sharing photos from every show (contact me if you would like to share you pics) and more news as it happens.

If this is truly Rush's last big tour, then let's make sure we savor every moment and let the band know how thankful we all are for 40+ years of music, magic, and everlasting memories.

    On to Tulsa...
