<p align="justify">
On <a href=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/images/albums/rush-03.18.1974-proof.jpg target="_new">March 18th, 1974</a>, a typically cold day in the suburbs of Toronto, Canada, Rush released their self-titled debut album; the only album featuring their original drummer and co-founder John Rutsey. Though <b>Rush</b> was considered a fairly successful debut album for the band, the production and recording process wasn't without its share of issues. Recording began at Toronto's <i>Eastern Sound</i> back in April of 1973 with producer David Stock, and was completed within two days. The results, however, were less than stellar.
<br><br>
The band made the difficult - and expensive - decision to re-record most of the album at <i>Toronto Sound</i> in October where they also enlisted the services of Terry Brown. The second recording of the album led to the dropping of some songs, including their first single <i>Not Fade Away</i>. The initial recordings of <i>Finding My Way, Need Some Love, </i>and <i>Here Again</i> took place during this time. Recording, mixing, and editing was completed within a couple of weeks and the master tapes were finished on November 15th, 1973.
<br><br>
Months earlier, the band had produced their first single offering; <a href=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/single-you-cant-fight-it.php><b>Not Fade Away b/w You Can't Fight It</a></b>. Unable to get a Canadian record company to back the single, Rush and its management team formed their own record label, <i>Moon Records</i>. With distribution assistance from <i>London Records</i>, the single was distributed around Toronto and its surrounding areas. Unfortunately sales were virtually non-existent. Months later when the time came to release the album, Rush and <i>Moon Records</i> would once again enlist the distribution assistance of <i>London Records</i>. With an initial pressing run of 3,500 copies, <b>Rush</b> under the <i>Moon Records</i> label and famously with its bright red logo, was released. The album was originally scheduled for release in December 1973 however, due to global shortages in oil at the time, and given vinyl is a petroleum byproduct, it was delayed until March of 1974. After <b>Rush</b> was released, the band, their management and crew had a release party at the <a href=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/images/tourdates/1974-03-18-24.jpg target="_new"><b>Piccadilly Tube Bar</a></b>; a venue they would perform at over two dozen times during their early career.
<br><br>
<a href=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/single-you-cant-fight-it.php><img src=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/images/albums/single-you-cant-fight-it/cover-s.jpg align='left' hspace='8' width=25% border='0' alt="R50: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the release of Rush's Debut Album"></a>After garning moderate success in Canada, Rush signed a recording contract with <i>Mercury Records</i> who began distribution of the album in the U.S. in early August of 1974. The 'Rush' logo's color was changed to pink on the Mercury release, however to this day it's not clear why this change was made.
<br><br>
After the Mercury release of the album, two additional singles - <a href=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/single-finding-my-way.php><b>Finding My Way b/w Need Some Love</a></b> and <a href=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/single-in-the-mood.php><b>In the Mood b/w What You're Doing</a></b>" - were released, the latter of which reached #88 on the US Hot 100 singles chart. <b>Rush</b> would peak at #105 on the Billboard Album charts and would receive a Gold certification by the RIAA, denoting sales of 500,000 units, on February 1st, 1995; nearly 21 years later!
<br><br>
Today, 50 years later, we not only celebrate the release of <b>Rush</b> but also all those who helped to pave the way to its realization. And the rest, as they say, is history.

<p align="justify">
The upcoming May 2024 issue of <i>Guitar World</i> magazine features a lengthy interview with Alex Lifeson where the discussion centers around a deep dive into his new line of signature Lerxst gear — amps, pedals and the new
Limelight guitar (which is based on his original Hentor Sportscaster). In addition to his gear, Alex does discuss the possibility of making music with Geddy in the future and his time with his friend on the recent <i>My Effin' Life In Conversation Tour</i>
<blockquote>
"...I will say that doing this book tour with Geddy [for Lee’s 2023 memoir, My Effin’ Life], I did a few of the stops with him, and it’s kind of reignited interest in us getting out and playing. And the shows that we did last year for Taylor Hawkins [at the 2022 Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concerts] were inspiring, too. So for a little while I thought, you know, it’d be kind of good to get back out. And then I thought… nah, not really. [Laughs] I mean, we toured for 40 years. I’m not interested in going back out on tour. I don’t wanna sit in a hotel room for hours and hours and hours to work for a couple of hours. Been there, done it, loved it. But that’s in the past. So whether Ged and I get back together again and write or do anything, we’ll see. Until then, there’s plenty to work on, you know?..."</blockquote>
The issue also focuses on albums that were released in 1984 and Rush's <i>Grace Under Pressure</i> was also highlighted.
<blockquote>
“Signals was a weird record for me — I liked the songs, but I thought it was a little weak in tonality,” Lifeson tells Guitar World. “Keyboards started coming up a lot more and so there was a little more of a fight for space with the guitar, which would continue with some of the following records.” The band’s next album, Grace Under Pressure, “was kind of a response to Signals,” Lifeson says, “and it became more of a guitar record.”
<br><br>
Indeed, while Grace Under Pressure, released April 12, 1984, still sounds closer to the synthy, heavily processed sound of Signals than the rock anthems of Moving Pictures, Lifeson’s guitar is more present throughout, spiking the tracks with driving riffs and slashing chord work, and infusing songs like “Afterimage,” “Between the Wheels” and “The Body Electric” with characteristic hot-wired solos. “I think ‘The Body Electric’ is my favorite song from the record,” Lifeson says. “I really liked the solo on that one.”</blockquote>

<p align="justify">Mention the band RUSH to a music fan and they might describe the legendary Canadian trio as being well known for complex arrangements, powerful drumming, bombastic out-of-this-world synth and the fearlessness. Twice As High Records and JIB Machine Records aren’t trying to recreate that sound note-for-note in their joint release, “RUSH FOR COVER”, landing Friday, April 26; they’re trying to recreate that awesome feeling listening to these songs. “RUSH FOR COVER” features nine, new interpretations of classic RUSH songs by an international cast of independent, underground artists (none of whom are trios themselves). “RUSH FOR COVER” is a RUSH tribute album created by RUSH fans for RUSH fans. The album will be available on opaque creamsicle and opaque sky blue vinyl along with a limited digital release.
<br><br>
Pre-sales begin Friday, March 15, via <a href=http://www.rushforcover.com/ target="_r4c"><b>RushForCover.com</b></a>. Coinciding with the pre-sales is a charity auction that includes the original painting used for the cover of the album by fan and artist Kelly Drew; a one-of-a-kind test pressing of “RUSH FOR COVER” signed by all of the artists; a stack of original RUSH vinyl (including a sealed, original pressing of “Clockwork Angels”, various promo 12”s and original 45s). All proceeds from the charity auction will be donated to the <a href=https://glioblastomafoundation.org/ target="_gl"><b>Glioblastoma Foundation</a></b>, <a href=https://www.v.org/ target="_v"><b>The V Foundation for Cancer Research</a></b> (founded by ESPN and legendary basketball coach Jim Valvano) and the <a href=https://pancan.org/ target="_pan"><b>Pancreatic Cancer Action Network</a></b>.

The album will be available in Vinyl and Digital download formats only (prices to be determined).

<p align="justify">
Alex Lifeson and Lerxst have just announced the launch of Limelight, a new signature guitar created in partnership with Canadian manufacturers Godin Guitars. Inspired by Lifeson’s iconic Hentor Sportscaster guitars from the mid-80s, Limelight thoroughly reimagines Lifeson’s original concept with modern part selection and craftsmanship to create a high-quality, forward-thinking instrument designed for today’s players.
<br><br>
“The original Hentor brought together a mix of tone and playability that empowered me to explore sounds and styles of playing that I had never attempted before,” said Lifeson.
<br><br>
“Ultimately these things became signature parts of my style. When the idea came to reimagine this guitar it made sense to partner with innovators like Godin who I knew I could trust to utilize the advances in technology and manufacturing skill to create something that could power a new generation of players looking to push their own boundaries.”
<br><br>
The Lerxst Limelight features a contoured Swamp Ash body for premium comfort, a Hard Rock Maple neck with a 12” radius, an Ebony fretboard, and medium stainless steel frets for fast and intuitive playability. Like Alex’s original modified S-type guitar, this has an HSS pickup configuration for maximum versatility, with pickups custom-wound by Mojotone to Alex’s specifications to ensure balanced performance in all pickup positions, and monster tone. Players have a choice of the classic Floyd Rose tremolo system or a Vega Trem with 18:1 locking tuners for superior trem performance with rock-solid tuning stability.

<p align="justify">
With the release of his new line of <a href=https://lerxstamps.com/ target="_lx"><b>Lerxst Amps</a></b>, Alex Lifeson has been hitting the promotion interview trail. Recently he connected with <i>Ultimate Guitar's</i> Greg Prato for an 18+ minute interview where the topics extended to his performance on the Taylor Hawkins tribute concerts, his signature Epiphone Les Paul guitar, and why he picked Gibson over Fender back in the day. Of course the conversation did touch upon the possibility of making music with Geddy Lee in the future:
<blockquote>... I don't know. There's certainly a lot of interest in us doing something. I think for a lot of Rush fans, they've been hoping for ... Geddy had his book tour. I went out on a few of those dates with him. I think that's kind of sparked more interest in us working together. Ged's a very busy guy. He's written a couple of books over the years. He has a lot of stuff that he's into. This is my studio in my apartment. I've been working on the Envy of None stuff as well as a few other projects.
<br><br>
So I've been playing and recording for all these years. When he's ready, he always says, 'Come over for a coffee and we'll go down to the studio and bash around a few notes.' Yeah, call me. And so far he's been so busy, but I think maybe in the new year - or this is the new year - maybe soon we'll find the time to sit down and see what happens," Lifeson added. "Maybe nothing happens. Maybe it's not there anymore. Maybe it's gonna be amazing. I don't know. We'll see. Honestly, it's not a priority for us. We're happy in our lives. So, it's not like we need to go back to something. And that's my fear. That if we - that would be the expectation, this is like Rush 2. But by necessity it has to be something different. And it can never be Rush. Without Neil, it can never be Rush. That's it. It's over. But you never know what can happen. So we'll see...</blockquote>

<p align="justify">Back in <a href=http://news.cygnus-x1.net/2021/06/neil-pearts-classic-car-collection.html><b>2021</a></b>, Neil Peart's classic car collection, what he affectionally referred to as the <i>Silver Surfers</i>, went up for auction during Gooding & Company's 17th annual Pebble Beach Auctions. It was at that time when we learned that Neil was working on a coffee table book that focused on his prized automobiles. From the original Rush.Com <a href=https://www.rush.com/neil-pearts-silver-surfers/ target="_rush"><b>announcement</a></b>:
<blockquote>Neil’s love of classic cars was a lifelong passion, and prior to his passing, he was extremely proud to have completed his final book titled, “Silver Surfers.” The following passage from his first coffee table book explains, in his own words, how the collection name came about:
<br><br> <i>
“The title Silver Surfers for my collection of cars occurred to me while driving my DB5 up and down the Pacific Ocean. Because it felt right to me, I guess – the idea that I was just one of the wave riders….
<br><br>
In search of natural peace, I often drove out that way and up in to the Santa Monica Mountains. Out past Malibu to Ventura County, I’d weave along barren ridges of rock and vegetation, the ocean always on one big side. The waves were slow and gentle, or churned out a powerful, rolling rhythm…”
<br><br> </i>
We are happy that his wish to see this book published will be fulfilled, with a release date to be announced. This will certainly be a loving homage to the man and one of his true passions.</blockquote>
Since that time, very little news has surfaced about the status of the book, until now. <a href=https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CN1BCDC6?tag=cygnusx1-20 target="_amz"><b>Amazon</b></a> is now taking pre-orders for the book and also has some additional information on it:<blockquote>
The final piece of writing by legendary Rush drummer Neil Peart was about one of the great passions of his life—collecting cars; the joy of collecting them, and the even bigger joy of driving them. In this never-before-seen piece, finished just before his passing in 2020, Neil writes about not only his lifelong passion for cars and the open road, but about his Silver Surfers—a rare collection of the best sports cars from the 1960s.
<br><br>
Each image in the book, personally selected by Neil, takes you on his journey of car collecting—including a photo of him at 22 with his first car, a 1969 Lotus Europa, purchased when he was working as a parts manager at his father’s farm equipment dealer; a 1948 MGTC he bought in London while on tour; and the black Ferrari car he drove while writing the songs for the seminal album Moving Pictures. And then there are his beloved Silver Surfers—seven classic 1960s sports cars, from an Aston Martin DB5 Saloon to a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, each one a gorgeous silver, except one: a black 1964 Shelby Cobra whose patina Neil loved so much he refused to change it.
<br><br>
Beautiful studio images showing both the interior and exterior of these extraordinary cars, as well as personal images of Neil driving them along the California coast, accompany Neil’s warm, personal memories of why and how he bought the cars, the friends he made along the way, and what it was like to be behind the wheel. Neil’s final work is a love letter to these cars that meant so much to him, and to the passion of the road that fueled his life.

In addition, Alex Lifeson was spotted backstage while several Barbie dolls were seen <a href=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/gl-toronto-12.07.2023.php><b>on stage</a></b>.<hr>
Over the past three weeks, Geddy Lee has been traveling across the United States and Canada as he celebrates the release of his memoir, <a href=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/my-effin-life.php><b>My Effin' Life</a></b> with his spoken-word 'In Conversation' tour. Speaking to near-capacity crowds in virtually every venue, Geddy has been joined by a wide variety of guest hosts each night, including Paul Rudd, Matt Cameron, Jack Black, Chad Smith, and more. As he ends the North American run of his tour tonight in his hometown of Toronto at the famed Massey Hall, one has to wonder if a certain best friend and guitarist may make an appearance <i>(Check back here for updates as the evening progresses)</i>.
<br><br>
The tour has been met with critical praise as Geddy opens up on various, personal topics including his upbringing in Canada as the son of holocaust survivors, his early musical influences, challenges of starting Rush, and being fired early on by one Alex Lifeson, to the still-painful impact of losing Neil Peart in 2020 to cancer. For a soul who cherishes his privacy, this tour offers a window into the man who has fronted Rush for nearly five decades while inspiring legions of fans with his musical prowess, fierce intelligence, and sobering humility.
<br><br>
Each show contains three distinct parts; a back-and-forth interview with the guest host, followed by Geddy's narration of a couple chapters from his memoir. After a short intermission, Geddy returns to read another chapter from his book before he and the guest host field pre-submitted questions from the fans in attendance. Geddy peering out into the crowd in search of the fans that submitted the selected questions must be a thrill for those lucky enough to be in the momentary spotlight with him. By all accounts, the questions have been varied and thoughtful, with Geddy spending a fair amount of time on each subject.
<br><br>
After a brief respite, Geddy will travel across the pond to finish out his tour with five nights across the United Kingdom, including stops in London, Sheffield, and Glasgow. As of this writing, there's no word if Geddy plans to resume the tour with additional dates however, given the overwhelmingly positive reception, it certainly is a possibility.
<br><br>
For those attending tonight's show or those in the United Kingdom later this month, you are all in for a treat. Enjoy!

<p align=justify>
Geddy Lee has shared "The Lost Demos", two previously unreleased solo songs available today on all streaming platforms.
<br><br>
Geddy originally recorded this pair of demos — <b>"Gone" and "I Am…You Are"</b> — during the writing sessions for his 2000 solo debut, "My Favorite Headache". Today, with the help of producer/engineer David Bottrill, he has unearthed them for the first time properly mixed and mastered.
<br><br>
Commenting on the project, Geddy shared: "I'm excited to see these two 'lost demos' released. I loved the songs when they were written and in some ways they feel as fresh and perhaps more relevant all these years later."
<br><br>
The Lost Demos is available on various <a href=https://geddylee.lnk.to/thelostdemos?fbclid=IwAR0rXlxqCD3thuOLtPykHj_fL497qumq7wBCTB30GDWx0ufNkU00U60AxiM target="_str"><b>streaming services</a></b> as well as <a href=https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CPB2ZM1H?tag=cygnusx1-20 target="_amz"><b>MP3 Downloads</a></b>.

<p align=justify>
Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson were featured on a segment of <b>CBS News Sunday Morning</b> this past weekend. In the segment, titled 'What's Next for Rush?' correspondent Jim Axelrod spoke with Dirk and Lerxst about their particular blend of musicianship, stagecraft and goofiness; how tragedy upended the band with the death of Peart; and what might constitute Rush's next chapter.
<br><br>
When asked about the possibility of Alex and Geddy 'getting another drummer and touring again', Geddy replied <i>"It's not impossible...but at this point, I can't guarantee it..."</i> Axelrod also spent one-on-one time with Geddy Lee where the two discussed his memoir 'My Effin' Life'.

At long last, Geddy Lee's <i>My Effin' Life In Conversation Tour</i> opens tonight at the Beacon Theater in New York City. The excitement among the Rush community has been building for quite some time; even more so in the past week. Not surprisingly, Geddy has been hitting the interview trail ahead of the tour and the release of <a href=https://www.amazon.com/dp/0063159414?tag=cygnusx1-20 target="_amz"><b>My Effin' Life</a></b> on Tuesday, November 14th. Among several interviews, including the recent article <a href=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/classic-rock-12.2023.php><b>This Is Who I Am</a></b> from the upcoming December issue of <i>Classic Rock</i> magazine, Geddy has indicated that he will be releasing two <b>NEW</b> songs.
<br><br>
From the <a href=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/classic-rock-12.2023.php><b>article</a></b>:
<br><i>
Recently I found a couple of tracks that were written for my solo album [My Favourite Headache, released in 2000]. My co-writer for that record, Ben Mink, discovered these demos, and when I listened to them I was not embarrassed at all, which was a good sign. I thought maybe if I could clean up these demos a little bit we could add them to the audio book of My Effin’ Life, and they would make for interesting listening as, you know, historic relics. And while working on these tracks it was really interesting the way they made me feel. It made me want to write again. It made me want to get back on the horse, so to speak. So I think that bodes well for the future. </i>
<br><br>
It will be interesting to see (hear) if Geddy premieres these songs during the In Conversation tour.
<br><br>
We'll have news, photos, information on the interviewer, and more throughout the evening (and throughout the tour).

With the upcoming release of his memoir <a href=https://www.amazon.com/dp/0063159414?tag=cygnusx1-20 target="_bb"><b>My Effin' Life</a></b> this November, Geddy Lee has announced an 'In Conversation' tour; a series of intimate dates across the UK where he will bring his memoir to life.

From the announcement:<blockquote>The evening promises to be an extraordinary experience, a once-in-a-life-time event. After the curtain rises, Geddy Lee will give his fans a peek into the very fabric of his life: from a deep reflection into his family and childhood, to a steep dive into the history of Rush; from the determined pursuit of music, to the personal memories of his life-long friends and band-mates Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart.

<br><br>
“Writing this book has meant spending so much time living in the past. I’ve never lived my life looking anywhere but forward, which is why I resisted doing this kind of thing for so long. Being in a band all those years was reassuring because it was an ongoing thing. It felt like it was forever. There was always unfinished business: the next record, the next set design, the next tour. It’s been the theme of my life. But you need a lot more determination to proceed in the world of music without the comfort of your bandmates, and I can only hope that finishing this book will release me to return to what I do and love best.” – Geddy Lee </blockquote>
The UK tour will kick off in Wolverhampton and will end in London. <b>North American dates to be announced</b>.

The inaugural Bubba Bash in 2023, dubbed as such in Neil's nickname, was a joint effort of YYNOT's Tim Starace and Neil Peart’s long time friend and security provider, Michael Mosbach. Together, they assembled an all-star lineup of Neil's friends, each generously making a special appearance.
<br><br>
Over $100,000 was raised for Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Neil’s memory. The sold out Bubba Bash was such a triumphant event, it was the catalyst to make this an annual event.

Bubba Bash 2024 will be held January 6, 2024 at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, PA.

All of the artists from the 2023 show will be returning for encore performances with YYNOT:

<li>Frank Bello (Anthrax)
<li>Jason Bittner (Shadows Fall, Overkill)
<li>Jon Dinklage (Clockwork Angels string ensemble)

<p align=justify>
This past Saturday, the Marching Illini marching band of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign performed the music of Rush during their halftime show during the University's game vs. Toledo. During the roughly eight minute show, the band performed renditions of <b>YYZ</b> and <b>The Spirit of Radio</b>.
<br><br>
Since 1868, the Marching Illini has entertained millions of fans with traditional and innovative performances that have paved a path of excellence making them known as “The Nation’s Premier College Marching Band.” In the 1920’s, John Philip Sousa called the Illinois Band the “World’s Greatest College Band.” Superlatives like this have come to be expected during the long and illustrious history of the University of Illinois Bands. The excellence of innovation continues today as the Marching Illini strives for the highest levels of musical, visual, and thoroughly entertaining performances in historic Memorial Stadium.

It was on this date back in 1953 that Rush Guitarist Alex Lifeson (born Aleksandar Zivojinovich) came into the world in Fernie, British Columbia. As Rush fans know, Lifeson co-founded the band in the summer of 1968 along with John Rutsey, the band's original drummer. Alex was also responsible for bringing front-man Geddy Lee into the mix. <br />
<br />
While Alex is obviously best known for being the guitarist for Rush, he's also a licensed aircraft pilot, motorcycle rider, a gourmet cook, avid golfer, and an artist. Alex has also been known to dabble with a little acting now and again. Back in 2018, he appeared a couple of times on the CBC comedy-drama <a href=http://www.cbc.ca/crawford/ target="_CBC"><b>Crawford</b></a>, which premiered on the CBC in Canada during the summer of 2019. <br />
<br />
Last April, Alex released a new musical project under the name <a href=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/albums-envy-of-none.php><b>Envy of None</a></b>. He also reunited with Geddy Lee on stage last year when the two performed a rendition of <i>Closer to the Heart</i> at the <a href=http://news.cygnus-x1.net/2022/08/geddy-lee-and-alex-lifeson-perform-at.html><b>South Park 25th Anniversary Event</a></b>.
<br /><br />
Please join me in wishing Alex a very happy birthday, with many happy returns. <b><font color=yellow>Happy Birthday, Alex!</p></font><a href=#disqus_thread>Comments</a><hr>

<p align=justify>Congratulations to Rush's frontman Geddy Lee who is celebrating his milestone <font size=4><b>70th</b></font> birthday today!<br />
<br />
Geddy (born Gary Lee (Gershon Eliezer) Weinrib) was born in the North York neighbourhood of Willowdale, Toronto. As many fans know, his given first name "Gary" transformed into "Geddy" during his high school days thanks to his mother's heavily-accented pronunciation of his name.
<br /><br />
Geddy began playing music in school when he was 10 or 11 and got his first acoustic guitar at 14. In school, he first played drums, trumpet and clarinet. However, learning to play instruments in school wasn't satisfying to Lee, and he took basic piano lessons independently. His interest increased dramatically after listening to some of the popular rock groups at the time. His early influences included Jack Bruce of Cream, John Entwistle of The Who, Jeff Beck, and Procol Harum.
<br /><br />
"I was mainly interested in early British progressive rock", said Lee. "That's how I learned to play bass, emulating Jack Bruce and people like that."
<br /><br />
Bruce's style of music was also noticed by Lee, who liked that "his sound was distinctive – it wasn't boring." Geddy has also been influenced by Paul McCartney, Chris Squire, and James Jamerson.
<br /><br />
He turned his basement into practice space for a band he formed with high-school friends. After the band began earning income from small performances at high-school shows or other events, he decided to drop out of high school and play rock and roll professionally. In time, that decision would lead to the early formation of Rush with his partner-in-crime Alex Lifeson and their friend John Rutsey. The rest, as they say, is history.
<br /><br />
In addition to his musical aspirations, some of Geddy's other interests include collecting fine wines, baseball, travel, ornithology and, more recently, becoming an author. His wine collection is rumored to include some 5,000 bottles and his love of baseball is well documented. In fact, it was ten years ago when Geddy <a href=http://news.cygnus-x1.net/2013/04/geddy-lee-throws-strike-in-ceremonial.html><b>threw out the ceremonial first pitch</b></a> at the home opener for the Toronto Blue Jays - something he admittedly dreamed of doing for years.<br />
<br />
Following the success of his book, <a href=https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/gl-bbbob.php><b>Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass</a></b>, which was released in 2019, Geddy turned his attention to writing an autobiography, announcing the effort back in <a href=http://news.cygnus-x1.net/2021/09/geddy-lee-currently-writing-memoir.html><b>2021</a></b>. Though it was originally delayed, the autobiography which he titled <a href=https://www.amazon.com/dp/0063159414?tag=cygnusx1-20 target="_amz"><b>My Effin' Life</a></b> is now scheduled to be released this November.
<br /><br />
In addition to today being Geddy's birthday, this date also marks the <b>49th</b> anniversary of the late Neil Peart officially joining the band, an event that would cement the rock trio that would go on to inspire the world for decades to come.
<br /><br />
Please join me in congratulating Geddy on reaching his 70th birthday -- and wish him many, many more!</p>

It's been nearly <a href=http://news.cygnus-x1.net/2021/08/rush-branded-beer-coming-august-30th.html><b>two years</a></b> since Rush and the Henderson Brewing Company announced their collaboration to bring a Rush-branded beer to the market. The success of their first offering, a Rush Canadian Golden Ale, was followed up by several new brews including a Moving Pictures Ale, a special Belgian Ale to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of <i>Signals</i> and, most recently, <a href=https://shophendersonbrewing.com/en-us/products/xanabrew?_pos=1&_sid=80523ba4d&_ss=r target="_xn"><b>Xanabrew</a></b>.

The collaboration didn't end there. Henderson also has an extensive <a href=https://shophendersonbrewing.com/en-us/collections/rush target="_st"><b>online Rush store</a></b> filled with various Rush/Henderson themed merchandise. They've also annouced the opening of a Rush-themed Henderson brewery at the Toronto airport later this year.

<p align="justify">
Foo Fighter's guitarist Chris Shiflett has just launched a new YouTube based podcast called <i>Shred With Shifty</i>. In the debut episode, Chris welcomes Alex Lifeson to the show. From the release:
<blockquote>
On the first episode of the new podcast series Shred With Shifty, which features host and Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett getting a front-row lesson from our favorite guitar heroes, Shiflett learns the solo from Rush’s “Limelight” with a little help from the man who wrote it, Alex Lifeson. According to Shiflett, Lifeson’s lead on the song “does exactly what a great solo should do. It’s a scene change, it’s kind of emotional, it builds, and yes, it shreds.”
<br><br>
Shiflett recalls that in context, both “Limelight” and Moving Pictures, the 1981 Rush record that featured the track, were stylistic and structural departures from the rock ‘n’ roll fare of the day. Compared to Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, and KISS, the Canadian prog-rock trio was practically avant-garde.
<br><br>
Lifeson joins Shiflett from a meticulously maintained studio den he built in his apartment (“I’m a Virgo,” Lifeson admits), and talks about early influences like Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, and Andy Summers. The first solo he learned was from Cream’s “Spoonful,” but even after Rush’s international success, he says he never felt confident in his ability. “I’ve always been a little bit insecure about my playing,” he says. “I always felt like I could be better than I was.” And despite Rush’s infamously complex arrangements and each member’s dazzling technicality, Lifeson remembers that there were occasionally some “trainwrecks” onstage. “With our music, if you got lost, boy, it was hard to get back,” he grins.
<br><br>
While memories of the “Limelight” sessions are imperfect (“That was 43 years ago. I can’t remember things from 40 minutes ago,” Lifeson quips), the guitarist recalls using a modded Stratocaster with a vibrato arm to record the song’s solo in five or six takes, which bassist and vocalist Geddy Lee and producer Terry Brown then comped into the final version. The idea was to create a solo that reflected the isolation and fragility of “living in the limelight.” “I really wanted to echo that feeling and that sense of loneliness,” he says.

<p align="justify">April's issue of <B>PROG Magazine</b> includes a cover feature on Rush and their upcoming release of the Signals 40th Anniversary Box set. The in-depth article, which was written by Dave Everley, also includes samples of the new artwork that Hugh Syme created for the box set.
<br><br>
An excerpt from the article discusses how <i>Chemistry</i> came about:<blockquote>
“We were touring so much that we were limited in the time we had to write for a record, so we utilised soundchecks or even days off, when Ged and I would sit down with a couple of guitars and do a little bit of writing,” says Lifeson. “But soundcheck was the best opportunity for us to throw some ideas around – we’d play a couple of songs in full, but also do a little bit of writing. I’m sure there are ancient cassettes headed up to his bandmate’s place after the Moving Pictures tour wrapped up in July 1981. He bought with him a tiny, cigarette packet-sized practice amp that he’d been given, and the pair proceeded to construct a primitive record booth by placing the amp and microphone in his guitar case.
<br><br>
“It was our way of isolating the sound,” he says. “Chemistry was one of the songs we worked on while I was there.”
<br><br>
Chemistry remains the only Rush song to feature a joint Lee/Lifeson/Peart lyric credit.
<br><br>
“Geddy and Alex together came up with the title and concept for the song, wrote out a few key phrases and words that they wanted to get in, then passed it along to me for organisation and a little further development,” wrote Peart in Sounds in 1982.

<b><font color=yellow>Update: April 7th:</b></font> Rush and Geddy Lee have announced the title, cover, and official release date of the memoir. "My Effin' Life" is now scheduled for a November 14th, 2023 release. More news coming soon.<hr>
<p align="justify">It was back in <a href=http://news.cygnus-x1.net/2021/09/geddy-lee-currently-writing-memoir.html><b>September of 2021</a></b> when we first announced that Geddy Lee was writing his memoir. From his Instagram post:
<blockquote>
So, how did I kill time during the pandemic? Little did I know that as of March 2020 I'd be locked down for over a year and a half—the longest time I'd spent in Toronto since I was nineteen and hit the Northern Ontario bar circuit with Rush.
<br><br>
Although Nancy and I had to cancel a bunch of adventures we'd been planning, there were some shiny silver linings to be found at home: teaching my grandson the finer points of baseball and birdwatching, tending to my pups (one of whom was quite ill) and spending the evenings with my lovely better half, glass of Armagnac in hand, as we watched every European mystery show ever produced. Oh, and another thing: I began to write. Words, that is.

I'm rounding third on this as-of-yet untitled memoir, which will be published by HarperCollins, edited by Noah Eaker, and is scheduled for release in Fall 2022.</blockquote>

Obviously the anticipated Fall 2022 release date didn't happen, but it does now appear that the still-untitled memoir will be released on May 16th of this year. Additionally, through information gathered from HarperCollins, the memoir will be available in Hardcover, Kindle, and Audio CD formats. It's also listed to be a whopping <b>512</b> pages in length. Cleary, Geddy had a lot to write about!
