The Bridge to the Future: Anika Nilles Joins Rush on Tour

Anika Nilles is a German drummer, composer, solo artist, and educator who first gained wider recognition through her meticulously crafted YouTube performances in the early 2010s. Though she started playing at a young age, she only began pursuing drums professionally in her mid-20s, eventually building a reputation for her stylistic versatility—blending jazz, funk, pop, fusion and progressive textures into her playing. Over the years she’s released solo albums (including Pikalar, For a Colorful Soul and Opuntia), toured internationally (including with her band Nevell), done drum clinics and masterclasses, and served as a drum educator—most notably leading the drum department at Germany’s Popakademie Baden-Württemberg.

Her career has also been recognized by the drumming community: she’s won awards such as “Up and Coming Artist” in *Modern Drummer*’s Readers Poll, *#1 Rising Star* in *DRUM!* magazine, and been honored as a top clinician and educator by *MusicRadar*. She also gained further prestige by being invited to tour with guitar legend Jeff Beck, which seems to have played a role in her selection as Rush’s touring drummer.

On the upcoming Rush tour, Anika Nilles will complement Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson by bringing fresh energy, tonal sensitivity, and technical fluency—qualities essential for carrying forward the legacy of Neil Peart’s drumming without merely copying it. Lee himself has remarked that she approaches Rush’s material anew, free from entrenched expectations, which allowed the band to “translate” the music in rehearsal in ways that felt alive again. Her ability to balance intricate rhythmic layering, dynamic subtlety, and groove makes her well suited to match Alex’s guitar and Geddy’s bass/voice without overshadowing them, but rather adding a new interpretive voice to the familiar material. In this way, she acts as both steward and innovator—a bridge between Rush’s storied past and a revived live future.
