Geddy Lee Honors Soundgarden: A Rock Legacy Bridged at the Hall of Fame
Soundgarden’s long-awaited induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on November 8, 2025, was both a celebration of the band’s legacy and a reflection of their far-reaching influence across generations of rock musicians. Among the many tributes during the ceremony, one of the most notable came from Geddy Lee, whose appearance in the induction video underscored the band’s standing among their musical peers.
Introduced by actor Jim Carrey, who delivered a spirited and emotional induction speech, the video montage traced Soundgarden’s rise from Seattle’s underground scene to international acclaim. Within it, Lee offered high praise for the band’s artistry, singling out their 1991 breakthrough album Badmotorfinger as the record where “all the great ideas clicked.” He described Soundgarden’s sound as “bold, inventive, and timeless,” noting how the album “stands the test of time exceedingly well.” Coming from one of rock’s most respected musicians, Geddy’s words carried special resonance — not only highlighting Soundgarden’s technical prowess but also affirming their place among the most accomplished acts in modern rock.
Following the video, surviving members Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd, Matt Cameron, and Hiro Yamamoto accepted the award, joined by Lilly Cornell Silver, daughter of the late frontman Chris Cornell. The performances that followed — featuring guests like Brandi Carlile, Jerry Cantrell, and Mike McCready — were heartfelt tributes to Cornell’s memory and the band’s legacy.
Yet it was Geddy’s appearance that gave the night a uniquely poignant sense of continuity — a veteran of progressive rock honoring a band that carried that spirit of exploration into the grunge era. His contribution bridged generations, reinforcing how Soundgarden’s music transcended its scene to earn admiration from some of rock’s most accomplished artists.
