Rush Celebrates Grace Under Pressure with Definitive Super Deluxe Box Sets
At long last, Rush have finally announced the upcoming box set release of the band’s tenth studio album, “Grace Under Pressure.” To honor this landmark 1984 release, two massive Super Deluxe Editions will be released this March, available as a 5LP + Blu-ray or 4CD + Blu-ray configuration, exclusively through the Rush Backstage official store.
Originally released on April 12, 1984, Grace Under Pressure was a pivotal moment in the Rush canon. Recorded at the legendary Le Studio in Quebec with producer Peter Henderson, the album captured the band navigating a shifting musical landscape of synthesizers and electronic percussion against a backdrop of Cold War anxiety.
A Return of the "Broon": In a historic move, this 40th-anniversary edition features a brand-new 2024 stereo mix of the entire album by the band’s longtime producer, Terry Brown. Although Brown did not produce the original 1984 sessions, he was invited by Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson to bring a fresh perspective to the material.
“I suggested it to Alex and Ged by saying, ‘Let me do a couple of tunes. If you love it, we can move forward,’” says Brown. “I went for a little more detail, different reverbs, and a larger footprint, all while maintaining the integrity of the original record.”
The Complete Toronto 1984 Concert: The centerpiece for many fans will be the first-ever complete setlist of the band’s September 21, 1984, performance at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Retitled Grace Under Pressure Tour: Live in Toronto 1984, the audio has been newly mixed from the original multitrack masters. This expanded edition includes 37 minutes of previously unreleased live performances that were omitted from the original 1986 concert video.
Immersive Audio and Visuals: The Blu-ray Audio disc offers a masterclass in modern sound, featuring:
The Studio Album: Newly mixed in Dolby Atmos and 5.1 Surround Sound by Richard Chycki. Live in Toronto 1984: The full concert video, newly edited and remastered in HD with Dolby Atmos, 5.1, and PCM Stereo audio options. Remastered Promo Videos: Classic videos for “Distant Early Warning,” “Afterimage,” “The Body Electric,” and “The Enemy Within” (the first-ever video played on Canada’s MuchMusic).
Exclusive Packaging and Collectibles: The Super Deluxe sets are housed in a premium box with reimagined cover art by original designer Hugh Syme. Each set includes a 52-page hardcover book featuring the first-ever liner notes written by Geddy Lee for a Rush reissue.
“Our songwriting had taken us to a different musical place,” recalls Lee. “An expansion of our soundscape with a range of new technologies... while getting to know the new dude behind the console with a very different working style.”
The book is filled with unreleased photos and brand-new illustrations for each of the album’s eight songs by Hugh Syme.
