Update (01/26/2012 7:25pm EST): News of Andrew's passing is beginning to hit some major news sources. Click HERE for the story from Toronto.Com. Thanks RushFanForever.Update: Rush has acknowledged the passing of Andrew via a post on their official Facebook Page as well as on Rush.Com:
"We're deeply shocked and heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing of our close friend and long-time photographer, Andrew MacNaughtan. He was a sweet person and a very talented artist. Words cannot describe how much he will be missed. - Geddy, Alex & Neil"
We are saddened to announce the passing of long-time Rush photographer Andrew MacNaughtan. From a fellow photographer's Facebook page:
"Word has just come out that legendary Canadian music photographer Andrew McNaughtan has died in LA of a heart attack while on photo assignment with RUSH. His photos have been the cement in hundreds of Canadian music careers. Some of the most iconic images to grace album and magazine covers. This is a huge loss. Condolences to friends and family."
As indicated above, Andrew was involved with numerous celebrities over the years. You can see many of his photos on his website at www.andrewmacnaughtan.com.
My dear friend Andrew macnaughtan passed away yesterday in LA. I will miss his kind and generous heart. Safe travels dear Andrew...
One of Andrew's most recent projects was Grace: Africa in Photographs; where Andrew had teamed up with some of Canada's top recording artists for a unique book that showcased the beauty of Africa and the transformational work of World Vision through a series of black and white photographs. He was interviewed last November regarding the project on the Morning Show (thanks RushFanForever):
Prior to the announcement of Andrew's passing, there were some rumors surfacing which indicated that Rush were considering delaying their 2012 tour in support of Clockwork Angels until the fall, despite a Spring release of the album. At this point, that should continue to be treated solely as a rumor until we receive official word from the band.
Of course, we'll have more information as it becomes available.
Our sincerest condolences go out to Andrew's family and friends.
Suddenly -- You were gone. From all the lives you left your mark upon...
This is horrible, he was still a fairly young person. I bet the guys are just crushed as he was their only photographer for years. I believe he even introduced Neil to his new wife.
Andrew, thanks for the snaps, may you rest in peace.
This has been such a difficult time for the Rush family. As many of you know, Anthem/SRO VP Pegi Cecconi was diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing treatment, and now this news about Andrew. Makes you realize yet again that life is very precious, and things can change in an instant.
Very sad news - met him in Manchester a few years back when he attended a UK Rush convention prior to their MEN Show - a very decent and friendly guy. He will be missed by all that knew him. RIP Andrew.
I was not on the internet all weekend and I was stunned by this news today! We all know that death is a part of life, but sudden death is such a huge shock to our system. Since my family has suffered through a sudden unexpected death, we can imagine how much pain the Rush family is going through right now. We hope that the Rush family knows that we as fans are mourning for their loss today. Over the years I felt like I had a glimpse of what Andrew was like from reading Neil's books. Such a tragic loss.
My thoughts & prayers are with Andrew's family as well as with the band.. Naturally, I didn't "know" him personally however always felt a kinship of sorts (from one photographer to another) as his work was beautiful!! Many times, his photography made me feel as if I was "THERE" - and I always have been where Rush's music is concerned - at least in spirit if I couldn't make it to a concert. He had the ULTIMATE "Dream Job" & he (AND his work) will be sorely missed - by his fellow photographers as well as the MANY RUSH fans who have eagerly sought out his work - If only to get a glimpse of my 3 FAVORITE musicians ("Mo", "Larry" AND "Curley") through HIS eyes!
