Geddy Lee talks R40 Live and Future Prospects: "Our touring life might be over"

Alex Lifeson 2015
An new interview with Geddy Lee that was recently posted at UK's MusicRadar continues the conversation about the possible end of Rush's touring career. The interview actually covers a number of topics including the release of R40 Live, many of Geddy's inspirations, and the filming/recording of the live release in Toronto:
“It felt like there was a great sense of pride in the house. The first night there were a couple of technical things bugging us and it took us a while to get a groove on, but then on the second we went out all guns blazing and it was one of the best shows of the tour.

“We were happy to have nailed it while the cameras were rolling – you don’t always get that when making a DVD. Best-laid plans and all…
With regards to Rush's touring future, Geddy had this to say:
“I really don’t know at this point,” admits Lee. “We’re not sure how many tours, if any, are left in us. Our touring life might be over; it just depends on being able to get a consensus to do more.

“Right now, we don’t have a consensus to go out on tour. And unless somebody changes their mind, it’s not looking good for that! But I remain optimistic that, maybe after some time, we can twist everyone’s arms and get back to work!”

  1. I call red herring...he basically doesn't want to get anyone's hopes up, but honestly I'd rather them surprise us.

  2. No, he is just being honest. He sincerely does not know what Neil's future plans are, and Neil doesn't wanna think about it at this point in time. There will not be a "Rush" without Neil, so that means waiting to see what Neil wants to do.

    1. Agreed Donna. The constant speculation is a bit tiring. However I have a suggestion for Rush regarding touring if you want to pass it along. Since Neil's health and time away from the family are - understandably - the prime issues, perhaps a one off 2-3 day stint at a venue like the LA Forum or Radio City Music Hall televised globally via pay per view would be a possibility -- especially if they decide to cut a new album. That way Neil wouldn't physically and emotionally suffer a grinding tour. I saw Yes under the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe banner do a live pay per view in the late 80s and thought it was great. Just a thought.

  3. I'm fine with their retirement. I would love to see them again but if any band deserves it, it is them. Most people can't play like Neil on their best day. Imagine being 65 and trying.

  4. Really not much new has been said. It's the same recycled information we've had for months. We'll just continue to wait. No official announcement either way. Give it time. Whatever they decide will be good for them. They've earned this. They are not done making music. They haven't had a long enough break yet. Give it time.

  6. Give them peace and quiet. Let everyone rest.
Besides, I really can't see Neil offering his retirement within a periodical before he told his bandmates first-hand. Just doesn't seem like the class act that they are......as friends, collaborators and businessmen.

  7. What about the european fans that didnt get the chance to say "farewell to the kings" this should of been the farewell tour worldwide... sad to say

  8. I'm glad I have gotten to see them a few more times over the last few years. The R40 show was amazing. Knowing this could be the last time I could possibly see them I took it all in. If I never see them again live I'm satisfied.

  9. Just one last time boys, greatest tracks tour, or even, post for fans to vote for favourite album or tracks, would be sad not to see them live one last time, technically the greatest band I have seen, and I have seen some bands in my time, ron, Birmingham, england
